Wataneyeh helps small businesses survive and thrive by offering them financing facilities that are otherwise unavailable through regular commercial banks. Short-term loans between 250,000 and 1 million Syrian pounds are extended to businesses that can make their case for a timely capital injection. This has helped businesses to either ride out tough economic conditions or overcome unavoidable stagnation. Wataneyeh is the only non-profit financial institution registered under Syria’s microfinance legislation; to date it has a loan portfolio of 1.6 billion Syrian pounds with a customer base of 12 thousand business owners. Since its inception, Wataneyeh has played an instrumental role in the continued advancement of the microfinance sector, by helping to make the legal and administrative landscape more enabling.
